Hydrocarbon Decontamination

Hydrocarbon Decontamination

The growing success of our services is due to the high level of competence of our technicians in the planning and execution of decontamination and the opportunity to benefit from a broad portfolio of high-performance chemicals.
Our decontamination always includes a package of tailor-made solutions, the success of which depends exclusively on the design phase. This first step, which is often not adequately evaluated, is the key to selecting the most suitable application, and products, choosing the best operating procedure, and minimizing costs.
In our experience, the achievement of the objectives is only possible if a monitoring strategy is also implemented. Strategy monitoring enables concrete and adequate time optimization and thus an effective global cost reduction of turnaround activities.

HYDROCARBON DECONTAMINATION SERVICES

EMBARK has recently advanced chemical technology for the removal of hydrocarbon sludge and noxious substances from process system vessels, pipelines, and associated equipment.

Process systems are traditionally exposed to high-temperature steam to provide system decontamination. This type of treatment is often ineffective since steam or hot water is inefficient at penetrating relatively thick sludge deposits, and excessive time is often required to achieve desired results. EMBARK has developed several effective chemical approaches.

This is the process of cleansing an object or substance to remove contaminants such as microorganisms or hazardous materials, including chemicals, radioactive substances, and infectious diseases. The purpose of decontamination is to prevent the spread of microorganisms and other noxious contaminants that may threaten the health of human beings or animals or damage the environment.

Refinery and Petrochemical Decontamination Services is a quicker, safer, and more environmentally friendly method of hydrocarbon removal. Decontamination Services uses specialty emulsifiers and detergents during steam out or at the start of turnaround or maintenance shutdown to remove both light and heavy hydrocarbons. It provides for a quicker shutdown because the system will be clean, there will be low benzene levels and there will be Zero LELs so the system can be quickly opened, easily inspected, and repaired which can shorten a turnaround dramatically. It also allows the recovery of hydrocarbons that can be recycled back into the process for more cost savings.

HYDROCARBON DECONTAMINATION SERVICES

Decontamination is used to remove light and heavy-end hydrocarbons. It can effectively eliminate benzene, toluene, xylene, and H2S. At EMBARK Environmental Services, we offer the most comprehensive hydrocarbon decontamination package in the market today that can effectively reduce downtime, HSE liability, waste disposal, plant turnaround, maintenance, or emergency shutdown time. Our engineers will work closely with the clients to design the most efficient and cost-effective circulation loops to decontaminate either full or partial refinery units, such as crude and vacuum, cooker, thermal and hydrocrackers, FCCU, and others.

EMBARK offers technical support for pre-engineering and execution of the decontamination/chemical cleaning project in the oil refinery and petrochemical industries and is fully capable of designing and executing Full Unit Decontamination job, where the entire unit can be decontaminated within an estimated 30-hour period.

By working in close cooperation with process engineers, the operations and maintenance team, and the incorporation of the company principals, EMBARK can help oil refineries in the Asia Pacific region to mobilize the crew and equipment required to carry out chemical cleaning of their refinery process units. This includes the specification of temporary pumps, hoses, fitting, pump operations, and anything else that is needed for the job.

EMBARK also provides its clients with a comprehensive written procedure and loop diagrams to ensure that job execution is carried out safely, timely, and effectively. All the decontamination procedure and circulation loops are designed with thorough input from the units operations and process engineering personnel; hence by the time of the project execution, EMBARK decontamination experts together with the Principal [full unit decontamination] ensures to have achieved seamless integration with clients turnaround management and operation team.

Turnaround (TA) operations of hydrocarbon processes are carried out after a typical six-year production run. The preliminary step of each TA, commonly called shutdown, is crucial for the smooth running of the TA. However, this is a step that can generate risks both inside and outside of the equipment, potentially impacting the health of operational workers, the environment, and the integrity of the equipment in the unit.

At the end of the shutdown, the opening of each circuit poses the risk of toxic compounds (mainly H2S or carcinogenic volatile organic compounds) being released into the atmosphere. Simultaneously, the penetration of oxygen into the system can create potentially explosive conditions. This oxygen intake, combined with the potential presence of pyrophoric substances such as iron sulfides, poses a permanent threat of ignition of dried organic deposits accumulated on internal equipment and requires non-stop prevention and survey measures.

It is therefore essential that all these risks be mitigated within a few hours after the end of a production run, typically during the steps of de-inventorying, washing, and degassing of the units by the production department prior to any maintenance operation.

Efficiency and thorough degassing procedures set the stage for the rest of the TA operations, making the plant safe for maintenance work, and reducing delays and production losses.

EMBARK's decontamination services focus on the chemical optimization of degassing shutdown procedures, while fully respecting health, the environment, and the integrity of production assets. Thanks to our services, safe, gas-free conditions can be guaranteed at the opening of every properly decontaminated circuit, while minimizing the total duration of degassing and the operational expenditures of this crucial step for the success of the TA.
